India has competed in fourteen of the eighteen previous Commonwealth Games; starting at the second Games in 1934.

India hosted the Games in 2010, at Delhi.It was India's most successful Commonwealth Games to date with Indian athletes winning 38 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze medals.
At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, India was fourth in the medal tally (repeating the fourth place achieved at the 2002 Commonwealth Games), and was fifth in the All-time tally of medals, with an overall total of 372 medals (140 Gold, 124 Silver and 108 Bronze).[1]

1930 - Did not Participate in first Commonwealth Games.
1934 - Only one Bronze medal in Wrestling. In Welterweight category, Rashid Anwar won Bronze medal, India's first ever Commonwealth medal.
1938 - Did not win single medal in third Commonwealth Games.
1950 - Did not Participate.
1954 - Did not win a medal.
1958 - After medal in 1934, India won its second medal in 1958 after 24 years. In this game India won 2 Gold and 1 silver medal.
1962 - Did not Participate.
1966 - India won 4 gold medals. and a total of 8 medals.
1970 - India, for the first time won over 10 medals in total.
1974 - Highest no. of total medals India won till 1974.

1986 - Did not Participate.
1990 - India won over 10 Gold medals and over 30 Total medals for first time.
1994 - India won total of 24 medals.
1998 - India won total of 25 medals.
2006 - India once again got the fourth position, but wasn't able to match their performance in the 2002 games in terms of the medal count.
2010 - India's best performance ever in commonwealth games being second next to Australia
